Flash with captioning in Real Player

The demonstration requires Real Player 7.0, which supports closed captions. Closed captions are turned off by default so it will be necessary to turn them on in order to view the captions. Captioning can be turned on by selecting from the Real Player menu View >> Preferences >> Content, then checking the "Enable optional caption." This may also be accomplished by right clicking (or click and hold for Mac) inside the Real Player embedded in this page, then selecting the same menu items as those mentioned above.

d

Captions are created in a separate file that is streamed simultaneously with the Flash presentation and with an audio stream using Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL). The SMIL source can be viewed using the Real Player menu item View>>Clip Source or by right clicking (or click and hold for Mac) on the embedded Real Player on this page while it is playing, and selecting Clip Source. The streamed Real Text Transcript is a simple file in which time stamps control the presentation of each line. Hypertext links may also be included in the text of the transcript. The National Center on Accessible Media (NCAM) provides MAGpie, a free transcript creation tool that also creates SMIL markup to synchronize the transcript with its movie clip.

Information on Streaming Flash, SMIL, and Closed Captioning can be found in the Real Networks G2 Production Guide.
