Alternative Formats and Keyboard Access

Accessible Flash

d

Flash presentations can be made somewhat keyboard accessible. The ACCESSKEY attribute can be added to the OBJECT tag that contains the Flash Presentation so a key combination (ALT 6) can bring the movie into focus. Alternatively, the TAB key can be pressed repeatedly until the movie receives focus.Once in focus, use "g" for go, "w" for wait (or pause), and "s" for stop. Once the Flash piece is in focus however, their is currently no way to bring focus back to the page it is embedded in so the rest of the page is once again keyboard accessible. Neither ACCESSKEY nor TAB will bring the Flash movie into focus using Netscape.

Since a hard of hearing or deaf user will be unable to hear the words spoken by the character, a transcript of the dialogue must be included. In this case the d-link to the bottom right of the movie leads to a description of the movie and transcript of the dialogue. Similarly, a blind user using assistive technology that can not access the Flash movie, have a description of the movie and alternative format for the audio output available through the d-link.

Also see the synchronized Flash with Captioning example linked from the examples page.
